The winner of the 1st Annual Essence of MTG in Photography Award went to Horton “Fireball” Railsbeck for his stirring portrait of Brainburst’s Feature Writer Patrick Higgins. Here in all its glory is the award-winning photo.

“I think I captured all the passion, energy, and fire Patrick exudes in life.” proclaimed Railsbeck, who conducted the press conference sporting a beret made from Mana Clash cards. “I used subtle shades of red to imply his inner essence while at the same time, blurring the image to show his more humorous side.”

When asked if the real inspiration for his photo was merely capturing Higgins in mid belch while forgetting to use a flash, Railsbeck responded, “Interview over.” and stormed out of the room.

Committee Chairman Wooster C. Calhoun commented on the factors used in the selection process. “It’s somewhat in focus and he’s not smiling, which is good. Besides, you can really smell the Taquitos with extra cheese when looking at it. To me and the committee this represented the very essence of Magic: the Gathering.”

The fame of his photo has spread into Higgins’ personal life as he’s been seen around town with top fashion models and Hollywood actresses, including two time Oscar winner Hillary Swank. Although she didn’t comment directly as to their relationship, Swank was quoted as saying, “Higgins would be a big step up from my ex-husband Chad Lowe.”

Higgins himself was unavailable for comment, but the powers that be at Brainburst have indicated that that their star attraction has asked for a less impressionistic, more realistic photo of him to be used for his next column, shown below.
