PT Boston: The Platy Perspective

By: Platy - September 30, 2003

PT Boston had a plethora of fashion dos and don'ts to choose from. Again the Scandinavians scored highly on the fashion level, and seeing a group of them in person made me realize how much better they not only age than Americans but how much better looking in general most European Magic: the Gathering players are than American magic players. A Scandinavian magic player can pass as a fairly normal person within society, whereas place an American magic player within a social situation and their true roots soon show.

For example, Brian David Marshall's clothing would look down right silly in any atmosphere other than a Magic: the Gathering tournament or comic con. Actually, they look rather silly on him alone. Whereas any of these Scandinavians would look fine in any casual setting, be it school, shopping or going out with friends to pick up the ladies.

This team, known as The Pinks, got mad props from me. Not only did they have a cute name, but they coordinated for the name as well, each wearing an item of pink, whether it is a pink shirt or a pink hat. It was nice to see a male group unafraid to show a more feminine side, even though it took a few glances to make sure they were all male. My only complaint was that the knitted pink hat was a different shade of pink, much brighter than both the shirt and the other hat, but they tried, so I give them credit. And yes, they are Scandinavian.

Ed Fear also brought a pleasant surprise on the fashion front. His haircut is absolutely stunning. It really slims down his face and makes it much more attractive than it has ever been. The punkish bangs in the front give him a more youthful feel and lighten his face rather than dragging it down. After all, we all know Mr. Fear is getting on in the years. He's even gone so far as to feel his biological clock a-ticking and try to settle down with a lovely wife. It's about time he invested in a more youthful look, as these years have begun to show. Perhaps he cut his hair to short to rid himself of the encroaching grey.

Of course again we had the classic Norwegian Team Outland with their standout Nitter. What you really miss with this shot is the pair of sky blue wrestling styled shoes that Eivind was wearing with this outfit. Later Team Outland impressed me again with their t-shirts this time. It seems the Scandinavians have taken a liking to matching outfits. The result is something rather confusing, but cute all the same.

The French may cling to their Winnie the Pooh's in times of losses, but others resulted for more unconventional methods of good luck charms. This Dutchman stored all his faith in this little stuffed animal, if you could call it that. This wasn't the only item of interest the Dutch provided, other than beating each other senseless with blowup weapons, they had a few interesting hairstyles. The amount of hair gel gracing those heads would probably be enough to glaze a dead cow. I must say, cute, skinny, blonde boys in super man shirts is definitely a good thing, and can't be fashionably wrong.

Many of the matches were a disappointment stylistically. They always say let the best man win, but in my opinion, it clearly should be the best dressed. Here with Linde and Österberg, it was clear that Österberg had the upper hand clothing wise. Not only is Rikard better looking, but he also has a better outfit, his black shirt is more fitted, giving him a cleaner, crisper look. The jeans look so much better with the black shirt than the khaki colored shorts on Linde. The finishing touches on Österberg's outfit include a simple black choker and that very neat hat. Linde on the other hand wears those same necklaces, time and time again, and they just do not do it for this outfit and they cannot stand up to the sleek confidence of Rikard's threads. It was very disappointing to see such a nicely dressed player lose to such a scrub.

It was just depressing to watch this match up. With Lovre now on the PT, Kibler has some definite competition for sexiest Magic: the Gathering player of the year. Whereas Brock, well, he looks like a 6th year student who is trying to join a fraternity. Lovre was wearing a cute kiss/storm trooper's shirt and the black jeans fit him perfectly without being too tight. In general it was just painful to watch.

I can also tell you right now, the whole reason this match up and loss occurred was because Kai was wearing that shirt. Even Huey's poor fashion sense can overcome that t-shirt.

One thing that really impressed me about Boston was Tomi Wallamies. From the last time I analyzed him he cleaned himself up pretty well. His pants were fitting nicely and matching and even his shoes were spiffy. Nice work Tomi!

Before I finish up and run to practice, this little beauty caught my eye. I haven't a clue what the heads at TOGIT were thinking when they designed these shirts, but they are almost as tacky as sports jerseys at a magic event. And I really must say, nothing is worse than a basketball jersey on a fat man. These shirts are oversized, colorless and in the TOGIT crew's own vernacular "stains". To improve these shirts they really must chose one color, preferably not that awful heather grey. The contrasting color on the sleeve is just odd, it might look better if the shirt colors weren't grey and blue. In case you're wondering what shirt I am talking about, refer to Patrick. These other shirts are slightly better, but again, they are blasé in comparison to the shirts of Team Outland and the Mushrooms. Even the font that the names are printed in seems goofy. I almost pity the boys wearing them. But then again, when looking at the faces of those like Adam Horvath, it seems to suit them. Remember to dress well children. Til the next major event,
