Rosewater launches Roseanne Q&A

By: Nevyn - July 15, 2002

After a number of responses to his latest plug of his former career as a Roseanne writer, Mark Rosewater has launched a new column, appearing every wednesday, on MagictheGathering.com.

The article series is entitled "Making Roseanne", and this writer has obtained through anonymous sources (incidentally, thanks Aaron) a copy of his first column, scheduled for next week. The column generally takes a question and answer form and is used to respond to the many issues that readers have raised about his participation in the sitcom. Here is an excerpt from next week's column:

QUESTION: Why do you write bad episodes?

ANSWER: Good and Bad exist in a constant continuum. If none of our episodes sucked hard, then the 'good' ones would appear less good. You need the contrast of a stinker episode to make people appreciate the true gold that are the good episodes I write.

In addition, on network TV you often need to fill a week with rerun. By having our loyal fans in constant fear of a brand new stinker episode, they would actually be relieved to see a rerun of a classic show.

QUESTION: Have you had any offers to write for other popular sitcoms.

ANSWER: I sent in an episode script for the show 'Scrubs', but it turns out that it was a spoof on shows like ER and had nothing to do with what I thought it did. They were so hard up for content, however, that they almost used it anyway. Then they got the cease and desist order from Matt Rubin. That boy is CONNECTED, and I shouldn't have written him into the episode. Since then, I haven't gotten a call from any studios, so I figure they either just lost my number or Rubin had me blacklisted.

There has been some controversy as to whether this column, which is completely unrelated to magic, should be appearing on a magic website.

When asked whether he expected a negative reader reaction for writing about something non magic related, Rosewater said

"Are you kidding me? Half this website's readership LIKES lifegain. I told them that Grow was dominating type one and they actually believed me! We let them make a card, and they made a hard to splash GREEN creature! I don't think they'll even NOTICE that I'm not talking about magic."

Another unfortunate effect of the new column is that Rosewater now has less time to devote to his other regular column, Making Magic, and his popular trivia contest, Question Mark. Trivia questions have now slipped to the level of "name a blue card".
