Pro Tour Nice: Recap

By: MB - May 06, 2002

Pro Tour Nice started off with a bang Thursday with the now infamous Benafel vs Wise feature match in round one of the Masters competition.

Benafel is an alleged "savage cheater" who may or many not have written a Magic Invitational Report with a secret message stating that "Joe Wise's mother is very fat and Gary also." Wise is a reputed "obnoxious loudmouth" who obtains "prestige, recognition, respect, self-assertion, expertise, [and] power" through the game of Magic. There was much more on the line in this match than the $2,000 pay check.

GW: "Because you are a savage cheater."
CB: "How can he just say that about me?
GW: "Because it's true."
CB: "Well, I could call you a ...[insert expletive]"

The classic battle between "obnoxious loudmouth" and "savage cheater" has been waged on Magic play mats throughout the game's short history. Asking which is greater is like asking "Coke vs. Pepsi", "Immovable Object vs. Unstoppable Force", or "Britney vs. Christina". Gary Wise's defeat was an upsetting loss for obnoxious loudmouths everywhere. Gamers such as PTR, Tom Guevin, Jason Opalka, and Mouth surely held their heads in shame at the outcome of this match. At the same time, savage cheaters across the planet, such as Case McCarrel, Ryan Fuller, Theron Martin, and Mouth surely rejoiced at the outcome.

The Return of Ed Fear

Ever since his return to sanctioned play, Eddie has been on a rampage. He brutally mauled his opposition in his first tournament back, a PTQ for Nice. After drafting a strong blue/black deck in draft 4 of the tournament, Fear felt like he was a lock for the top 8. Unfortunately, the dream died in round 14, when Fear was defeated by eventual champion, Eivind Nitter.

Fear: "You also took Aven Windreader over Concentrate."
Eivind: "Yeah, who wouldn't?"
Fear: "Me. I'm pretty sure that's the wrong pick."
Zvi (from the stands): "I'm pretty sure it isn't."
Fear: "Really? The 'draw three' mechanic has always been strong."
Zvi: "So has the 'big guy' mechanic."

Kai Didn't Win!

With Kai Budde in the top 4 of the Masters and top 8 of the Pro Tour, it seemed likely that we would have to contact MD to expound his feelings on Kai winning again. Thankfully (for the MiseTings reading public, not for Kai), Kai's undefeated record on Sundays was broken this weekend.

Chic Champion

When Eivind Nitter of Norway defeated Bram Snepvangers to become the 2002 Pro Tour Nice Champion, he was probably wearing the most expensive outfit ever worn in a Pro Tour final. Nitter had shelled out 600 dollars for his Dolce and Gabbana Indian style pants and shirt, making him the Pro Tour's most fashionable champion. "Now I'm going to expand my clothes budget," the 23-year-old player grins after winning 30 000 dollars.

Wow. Props to you Mr. Nitter. I bet you shower daily.

European Domination

This weekend saw only 1 American in Masters t8 and two Americans in the Pro Tour t8. Gary Wise commented, "Americans play too much poker and too many money drafts when they should be practicing." Personally, I think that comment is way off base. The American gamers I know are all diligent playtest-- OMG HOLD PLS I HAVE KK! :) . . . FUCK! FUCKING RIVER STR8 PIECE OF SHSDFJASLFJASDLFKJASFSDFJASDLFKJASDLFKJ . . .
