LePine Penalized, Below PT Point Threshold
Merrimack, New Hampshire -- Mark LePine, Pro Tour Player from Merrimack, New Hampshire, was stunned to find on Monday that he had fallen below the PT Point threshold for "exemption from DCI rules enforcement" status, and has been suspended from sanctioned play for Unsportsmanlike Conduct.
"I don't know what is going on," lamented a confused LePine, "I have 10 Pro Tour Points as of the Oct.17 2001 ratings run, which should easily enable me to continue flaunting the rules that we all know only scrubs and amateur players should have to follow!"
Tom Guevin, another stellar example of sportsmanlike conduct from the New Hampshire area, was also confused by the suspension. Taking a momentary break from his busy routine of failing to amuse spectators and verbally abusing his fellow players and tournament officials, Guevin commented, "Sure, LePine was unsportsmanlike, and sure, he's been warned about being unsportsmanlike in the past on multiple occasions, but come on, the man has *10* Pro Tour Points. Isn't that easily past the level at which the DCI refuses to admit that their players have committed any wrongdoing?"
Jeff Donais, Grand Poobah of the DCI, could not be reached for comment, but the following statement was released by the DCI Ministry of Propaganda: "The Le Pine suspension is currently under investigation. Obviously, with 10 Pro Tour Points, Le Pine should not have been penalized to the degree that he was. Full year and above suspensions are normally reserved for those players without any Pro Tour Points, or non-Americans Pros with less than 5 Pro Tour Points, but sometimes a Pro slips through the cracks. The matter is being looked into."
LePine, who was suspended for a period of one year, effective Nov.19 2001 to Nov.19 2002, is known for consistent finishes in high level events over the life of the Pro Tour. LePine is also credited with discovering the "Kai doesn't lose on Sundays" effect, when he failed to win a single game against fellow planeswalker Kai Budde in the finals of the 1999 World Championships. Budde is rumored to have commented, "And so, mortals. Now it begins." at the time of the win.
